Can't figure out how to reply to Holden McGroin's answer (thanks by the way), but let me just say that NO, the noise just started, has not been going on for awhile. Neighbor said it sounds like the gears are stripped. Regardless, the opener was installed in 1987, with a new idler assembly put in in 2004. So I'm off to Home Depot to get a new Genie opener.
